THE TAILORED LOOK WITH A SOFT TOUCH

Women's fall clothes may be moving in a decidedly masculine direction these days, with ties, white shirts and blazers being adapted to the feminine form. But that doesn't mean the clothes have to be stiff, tailored or even masculine.

A good case in point is the new fall collection done by Alice Blaine for Liquidity, which will be available at Bloomingdale's, Macy's and Charivari in August. With the lightest touch, the designer softens the masculine silhouette with a knitted tweed jacket, $72, below at left, paired with soft, draped cropped pants, $58; a white sweatshirt; open-weave stockings, and, for an added whimsical touch, white leather gardening gloves. Miss Blaine takes knitted tweed a step further in a long, flared skirt, $78, below right, that she pairs with a raglan- sleeved white cotton shirt, $54, and an antique man's tie. As for the shoes, the flatter the better.
